PRIME Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare (MP) has paid tribute to the local Solomon Islanders who supported the Allied Forces during the Second World War.
This was during his remarks to mark the 77th anniversary of the Landing at Guadalcanal.
“These were ordinary Solomon Islanders, young men, fathers and brothers who showed extraordinary bravery through their active participation helping the allied forces,” the Prime Minister said.
He stated, “for many of these brave men, their involvement with the war was borne out of a sense of duty. For others, they were driven by the necessity to help defend their land, their people”.
The Prime Minister stated that many that lived also benefited from the recognition of services they provided to the Allied forces and mentioned that whatever the reasons, their involvement is enshrined in the US and allied forces engagements in Guadalcanal campaign.
“The legacy of the Battle for Guadalcanal and its importance nationally and internationally and must continue to be upheld, continue to be remembered, and continue to be shared with our children and generations to come,” said Hon. Sogavare.
The Coast Watchers’ Memorial Plague at Commonwealth Avenue where we will also meet later this morning is another salient reminder to the present and future generations of the important contributions to freedom and to the price of peace.
“[This morning] we salute their bravery,” the Prime Minister stated.
